This 13th century mosque, Sufi Shaykh Yusuf Abu al-Hajjaj, was built on the ruins of the ancient Egyptian Temple of Luxor. At the time of its constuction sand completely covered the ancient temple, and it wasn't until the 18th century that the Egyptian temple was discovered and excavated. It was decided to leave the mosque intact, and it is still in use today. I visited the temple just after dawn, and I caught the light right at the top of the wall that the mosque sits upon. You can see the shadows of the columns on the other side of the courtyard.
