This is a view from inside the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The building was once a high school, but it was taken over in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge when they conquered the city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Pol Pot transformed this place, which became known as S 21, into a prison for anyone in the city that he deemed to be an enemy. From 1975 to 1979, an estimated 17,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng. In 1979, the prison was uncovered by the invading Vietnamese army. Out of an estimated 17,000 people imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, there were only twelve known survivors.
